IE reports:

A team from the Uttar Pradesh Police on Saturday arrested farmer leader Manveer Tevatia, wanted since May 7 in connection with the violence over land acquisition in Bhatta-Parsaul, from Hauz Khaz area of South Delhi on Saturday. The police said that acting on a tip off, they tailed a car in which Tevatia was travelling for about 2 km and arrested him when he tried to run away at a traffic signal.

Noida SSP Jyoti Narayan told reporters that the police teams engaged in the operation kept an eye on his movements after finding out that he was staying in a house in Hauz Khas.

TOI adds:

Providing details of the operation, the SSP said six police teams were formed in May to track down Tewatiya — leader of Kisan Sangharsh Samiti that spearheaded the agitation against the UP government’s land acquisition policy — and his accomplices. He had been declared a wanted criminal after the agitation in Bhatta and Parsaul villages turned violent on May 7, leading to the deaths of four persons, including two policemen. Tewatiya was accused of bringing arms into the villages. Rewards were also announced for the arrest of his aides Neeraj Malik, Premveer, Gaje Singh, Kiranpal and Manoj.

“For the last six months Tewatiya had been instigating the villagers of Gautam Budh Nagar under the pretext of the Kisan Andolan (farmers’ agitation). On May 7, two police constables and two farmers had lost their lives while the district magistrate of Gautam Budh Nagar was shot and many others were injured in the clashes that broke out during the protests in the villages of Bhatta and Parsaul,” said Narayan.

Soon after his arrest, Tewatiya was reportedly taken to Bhatta-Parsaul to recover the arms and ammunition he had allegedly stocked there. He is also being questioned about his accomplices. “As many as 22 criminal cases have been lodged against Tewatiya in the last six months. He has been charged with instigating farmers, collecting anti-social elements, providing arms, kidnapping government officers and leading the mob which clashed with the police,” said the SSP.

In a separate report TOI writes:

The manner in which Tevatia was arrested by UP police was condemned by all the opposition parties. BJP leader Rajnath Singh said the UP and the Central governments were responsible for Tevatia’s security. “Maya government will be directly responsible if something happens to Tevatia in police custody or in jail,” he said. Congress general secretary described UP police’s operation in Delhi without informing Delhi police as ‘kidnapping’. He said Tevatia is being victimized for raising farmers’ problems. The Congress invited Tevatia’s mother Harikari Devi to attend Rahul Gandhi’s ‘kisan mahapanchayat’ in Aligarh. SP also slammed Maya government for treating farmer leaders as criminal.
