Wishing you a prosperous and joyful diwali

Tomato Umlaut has a story for this diwali:

A mound of diyas, just out of a potter’s kiln: still hot to the touch, still covered in the ash from the oven, dappled with sunlight streaming through the leaves of tall trees. What could be more redolent of diwali: that festival of lights and giving, joy and properity? A happy diwali to you.

But spare a thought for the dirt poor couple: master potter and his wife, in their dismal little workshop in Orissa. The man is a wonderful craftsman, the woman adept at making the firing kiln. Between the two of them they do not have the money for treatment against the filaria parasite visibly growing in the potter’s legs. They make no impact on the glitter of our cities, except through the finger imprints faintly visible in the earthen diyas that light our homes. Spare a thought and some change for the organizations that work for people like them.
