The Indian government follows the Indian cricket team in hoping for the biggest god of cricket, Sachin Tendulkar, to pull it out of a tight spot, opines the Kolkata Telegraph:

Parliament can now cock its ears for the most famous soft voice in the country, provided Sachin Tendulkar can take time off from his busy cricket schedule.

The President tonight accepted a recommendation from the government to nominate the 39-year-old elder statesman of cricket to the House of Elders or the Rajya Sabha.

But the Congress knows well that Sachin will continue to be associated with its government in the public mind. The meeting with Sonia at 10 Janpath will do no harm to that perception.

The private reaction from leaders of other parties, all of whom had joined the recent chorus for the Bharat Ratna to be awarded to Sachin, reflected this. They wondered ruefully how the Congress had landed such a prize catch at a time its credibility had been hit so bad.

For the Congress this is a masterful stroke, a precise strike into an unfillable gap. IBN Live reports:

The move to nominate him has been welcomed from across the political spectrum, including the Congress as well as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

With a quickly trending #UnfollowSachin tag on twitter, it was clear that the stadium is not giving this a standing ovation. HT reports:

“I am perplexed. Who recommended him? What were they thinking? And tell me what will he do on that position? Sachin is a good cricketer and let them stay in the field of cricket and achieve greater heights,” said Deep Vora, a software professional.

Agreed another Mumbaikar Raghavendra BR, a musician. “Sachin is an achiever in his own right. But I don’t quite agree with him being nominated for Rajya Sabha, especially, with his busy schedule,” he said.

“Sachin never seemed to have any inclination towards politics or working of the parliament. I wonder if he has the time to get political, given that his passion for Cricket is so strong. However knowing the personality that he is, I am sure he could do a lot of good to cricketing in India,” said Ajinkya Raut, a dentist and a cricket fan.

Majority [sic] of tweets on the social networking website, Twitter, trashed the player’s nomination for the RS seat.

Sachin Tendulkar’s politics in recent years has been a steady Pan-Indian inclusive, but he needs net time with his social conscience. He probably also needs a coach to tell him to curb that instinct to grab every passing buck.

And the nomination for Rekha! What was the Congress thinking of? This film star has never demonstrated any connect with society apart from appearing in movies.
