Has Modi created sensational news?

leave a comment »

IE is one of the many news sources which feels that the following is sensational news:

In a sensational statement, Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi has thrown a challenge to all saying that if he is guilty of collusion in the Gujarat riots then he should be hanged – in 2002 thousands of minority community members were murdered by mobs that were not stopped by the administration or the police.

Modi said this in an interview with Shahid Siddiqui, editor of the Urdu weekly, Nai Dunyia.

According to Modi, “Agar main gunehgaar hoon toh mujhe phaansi par latka do”.

Why should this be sensational? Mr. Modi has always denied any role in the Gujarat riots of 2002, during his first term as Chief Minister of that state. Also, it is known to us all that Indian law does not allow people to be hanged unless they are found guilty of certain very well-specified crimes. Mr. Modi must not be hanged unless he has personally murdered anyone, or is found guilty of any other capital crime. India is not Gujarat 2002.
