Kanda is no batata
IBN Live reports:
Former Haryana minister Gopal Goyal Kanda, key accused in the Geetika Sharma death case, was sent to a seven-day police custody after he was produced before a Delhi court on Saturday afternoon. The Delhi police had earlier sought a 14-day custody of Kanda. The former Haryana minister was finally arrested after he surrendered in a dramatic early morning appearance on Saturday – 10 days after absconding. Kanda has been accused of abetting the suicide of 23-year-old former MDLR air hostess Geetika Sharma.
Kanda appeared in a news channel van at 4 am on Saturday morning and surrendered at the Ashok Vihar police station in Delhi. While surrendering, Kanda said he did this as he was willing to help in the investigation. “Delhi police shouldn’t have done this. I came here on my own will to help the investigation,” Kanda said.
Earlier on Friday, Kanda’s anticipatory bail plea was rejected by the Delhi High Court. The Rohini Court had on Thursday issued a Non Bailable Warrant (NBW) against Kanda. The court asked the police to execute the arrest warrant by August 24.
Geetika was found dead in her Delhi home on the August 5. Raids were conducted in several parts of Delhi, Haryana and Siliguri to trace Kanda but the efforts proved futile, a senior police official said.
In a suicide note found at her residence, Geetika alleged she was ending her life due to harassment by Kanda and MDLR official Aruna Chaddha. Both Kanda and Aruna have denied the allegations.
Evidence has gone missing in the few days that the Delhi police spent looking for Kanda. Z News adds:
Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate D K Jangala remanded Kanda to police custody after the Delhi police said they need his sustained custodial interrogation to recover various documents and some hard drives which were missing from the MDLR Group’s office and they also need to confront him with other documents which they have recovered till now.
During the hearing the police sought 14-days remand of Kanda saying that he is the sole source through whom they can collect all the documents and key evidence relating to the case.

Former Haryana Minister Gopal Kanda, the main accused in the suicide of airhostess Geetika Sharma, has got a month’s bail to attend an assembly session.
Mr Kanda, 47, has been in jail for over 14 months on charges of abetting the suicide of 23-year-old Geetika, a former employee in his MDLR airlines.
The court asked the legislator from Sirsa to furnish a personal bond of Rs. 5 lakh and imposed several curbs including a ban on foreign travel.
In court, the police had opposed his bail saying they had reason to believe that the former minister was tampering with evidence.
Mr. Kanda was remanded to custody on August 18, 2012. Which means his total term in custody till now cannot have exceeded 382 days, which is less than 13 months. In February of this year, Geetika Chaddha’s mother also committed suicide citing the harassment of Geetika as the cause.
